GBPly launches Free Google Maps Rank Checker to show businesses where they really rank
Where do you rank? GBPly’s Free Google Maps Rank Checker visualises how a business’s Google Maps position changes across a 25-point local search grid.
GBPly has launched a free Google Maps Rank Checker that shows how a business ranks across a 25-point local search grid. Registered users get 10 free checks every month, with no credit card or Google Business Profile connection required.

MANCHESTER, United Kingdom – October 5, 2026 – GBPly today announced the launch of its Free Google Maps Rank Checker, a new tool that shows local businesses, marketers and SEO agencies where a business appears in Google Maps searches.

Available at https://gbply.net/free-rank-checker, the tool gives users 10 free rank checks every calendar month. No credit card is required, and businesses do not need to connect or grant GBPly access to their Google Business Profile.

The checker is designed to answer a seemingly simple question: where does a business actually rank on Google Maps?

For a local business, there is rarely one single answer.

Rather than checking a Google Maps ranking from one location, GBPly searches the same keyword from 25 precise geographic points across an area selected by the user. The results are then plotted on a colour-coded heatmap, showing where the business ranks strongly and where its visibility begins to fall away.

WHERE DO YOU REALLY RANK ON GOOGLE MAPS?

Google states publically that local search results are mainly determined by relevance, distance and prominence. As a result, somebody searching close to a business can see different Google Maps results from somebody making exactly the same search elsewhere in the town, city or service area.

A business might appear in the top three results close to its premises but occupy a very different position just a few streets or miles away.

GBPly’s Free Rank Checker makes those differences visible.

Users begin by searching for their business and entering a keyword or phrase a potential customer might use, such as “emergency plumber”, “dentist near me” or “estate agent”.

The map centres on the selected business. Users can then move the map, zoom in or out and position the search area around the locations they want to measure.

GBPly draws a 5×5 grid across that area and performs the search from each of the 25 locations.

Each point on the completed grid shows the business’s Google Maps position from that precise search location. Results are colour coded so that stronger and weaker areas can be identified at a glance.

The completed check also shows the business’s average position, best position, top-three and top-ten visibility, and the businesses appearing above it at individual grid points.

This method of measuring local rankings is often known as geo-grid rank checking or local search grid tracking.

For the business owner, however, it answers a much simpler question: can customers actually find the business from the places where they are searching?

“Most business owners have searched for themselves on Google and seen a ranking they were happy with, but that only tells them what the results look like from one place,” said Mike Martin, CEO at GBPly. “Move the search a few streets away and the picture can change completely. We built the Free Rank Checker so businesses can see that for themselves without buying software, entering card details or connecting their Google Business Profile.”

10 FREE GOOGLE MAPS RANK CHECKS EVERY MONTH

Every GBPly account receives 10 free rank checks each month.

Previous checks remain available within the account, allowing users to return to an earlier search or repeat the same check later.

Completed reports can also be printed or saved as PDF files, making it possible for businesses, marketing consultants and agencies to retain or share a snapshot of local search visibility.

For local business owners, the checker can be used to see where they currently appear for important services and to run another check after changes to their Google Business Profile or other local SEO work.

SEO consultants and agencies can use the same tool to assess prospective clients, investigate local competitors and demonstrate how visibility varies across a client’s target area.

FREE RANK CHECKING VS ONGOING GOOGLE MAPS RANK TRACKING

The Free Google Maps Rank Checker is designed primarily for one-off snapshots.

A rank check answers the question “where do I rank now?” A rank tracker repeats those searches over time so businesses can see whether visibility is improving, declining or moving into new areas.

Businesses and agencies that require larger grids, saved keywords, scheduled scans, historical trends, recurring tracking, client reporting or GBPly’s Rank Replay feature can use the platform’s full Google Maps Rank Tracker.

Rank Replay uses historical grid scans to show how local search visibility has changed across the map over time.

The distinction allows occasional users to check local rankings without committing to a paid rank-tracking service, while businesses and agencies requiring continuous monitoring can move to ongoing tracking when needed.

At launch, the Free Rank Checker supports businesses in the United Kingdom, United States, Canada, Australia, New Zealand, Ireland and South Africa.

The Free Google Maps Rank Checker launches publicly on Monday, October 5, 2026.
